Allantoin

What is it?

A soothing, skin-conditioning compound found naturally in comfrey (Symphytum officinale) root and other plants, with a long history of cosmetic use.

What does it do?

Soothing/skin-conditioning active -- a rat wound-healing study using comfrey-root-extract creams (allantoin identified as a key regenerative compound alongside rosmarinic acid) found faster, more complete wound healing versus controls. A human pilot study of a multi-ingredient eczema moisturizer containing allantoin and bisabolol found significant improvements in irritation, erythema, itching and hydration after 2 weeks, though allantoin's individual contribution wasn't isolated from the other actives in that formulation.
