Azelaic Acid

What is it?

A naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid with dual anti-inflammatory and brightening/tyrosinase-inhibiting properties, widely used for acne, rosacea and hyperpigmentation.

What does it do?

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 21 randomized controlled trials for rosacea found azelaic acid to be an effective, well-tolerated topical treatment with a better efficacy profile than metronidazole (though less effective than ivermectin). Azelaic acid is also well established in the acne/hyperpigmentation literature for its dual anti-inflammatory and tyrosinase-inhibiting brightening action.
