Benzyl Alcohol

What is it?

A preservative, solvent and fragrance ingredient widely used across cosmetics and topical medications, functioning both as a standalone antimicrobial and alongside other preservative systems.

What does it do?

According to PubMed, a 2026 four-country European market survey of solid shampoos found benzyl alcohol was the single most common preservative used (present in 29 of the preservative-containing products surveyed), ahead of sodium benzoate (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1111/cod.70085). Separately, a 2022 case series documented allergic contact dermatitis to benzyl alcohol, used as an excipient in chlorhexidine-containing antiseptics, in six children, with several sensitized to more than one ingredient in the same product -- underscoring that even common preservative/excipient ingredients can sensitize, particularly with repeated early-life exposure (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1111/pde.15127).
