Betaine Salicylate

What is it?

A cocrystal/salt combining betaine and salicylic acid, marketed as a gentler alternative to standalone salicylic acid for exfoliating and acne-related skincare.

What does it do?

According to PubMed, a 2025 study characterizing a betaine-salicylic acid (BeSA) cocrystal found it had significantly lower irritancy and cytotoxicity than salicylic acid alone, while retaining strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, moisturizing and anti-acne efficacy in testing (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1039/d5md00001g). This is the only dedicated study of this specific cocrystal form found in this search; broader standalone-ingredient human efficacy data is limited.
