Enzyme Exfoliant ·
Bromelain
What is it?
A proteolytic enzyme derived from pineapple stems, used in skincare for enzymatic exfoliation -- its best-documented topical medical use is actually in wound debridement rather than cosmetic exfoliation.
What does it do?
According to PubMed, proof-of-concept clinical studies of a topical bromelain-enriched enzymatic concentrate (originally developed and already used for burn-wound debridement) found it eradicated basal cell carcinoma lesions in the majority of 22 tumors treated, well tolerated with healing within 2-3 weeks -- real, if specialized, clinical evidence for bromelain's proteolytic/anti-inflammatory action, from a medical/oncology-debridement context rather than a cosmetic exfoliation efficacy trial.
