Ceramide

What is it?

Ceramide refers to any of several closely related lipid species (the skincare industry commonly distinguishes types like Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP and Ceramide EOP) that make up the skin's natural barrier lipid matrix, alongside cholesterol and fatty acids.

What does it do?

Commonly used, often as part of a multi-ceramide-species blend, in barrier-repair moisturizers. A controlled clinical study found a multivesicular emulsion containing physiological lipids (ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids) rebalanced the stratum corneum ceramide profile and strengthened barrier function in adults predisposed to atopic dermatitis.
