Cetyl Alcohol

What is it?

A fatty alcohol used as an emollient and emulsion stabilizer in creams and lotions; despite the word "alcohol" in its name, it is a waxy, non-drying ingredient chemically unrelated to drying alcohols like ethanol.

What does it do?

According to PubMed, a 2022 case series of seven patients with allergic contact dermatitis from stearyl alcohol in topical medications found that when these same patients were patch-tested with the closely related fatty alcohol cetyl alcohol, two of three also showed a positive reaction -- a real cross-reactivity/safety signal rather than an efficacy finding, since cetyl and stearyl alcohol are structurally related fatty alcohols (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1111/1346-8138.16325).
