Chlorella Extract

INCI: Chlorella Vulgaris Extract

What is it?

An extract from the single-cell green microalga Chlorella vulgaris, studied for skin-repair signalling and as a marine ingredient for sensitive-skin cosmetic formulations.

What does it do?

According to PubMed, a 2026 in vitro study found Chlorella vulgaris extract enhanced migration and proliferation of human keratinocytes and upregulated skin-barrier markers (aquaporin-3, filaggrin) in a wound-remodeling cell model, with biocompatibility confirmed via hemolysis and chick chorioallantoic membrane assays, through a proposed TGF-beta1/mTOR signalling mechanism (DOI: https://doi.org/10.3390/cimb48101067). A 2021 review of marine ingredients in facial cosmetics for sensitive skin names Chlorella vulgaris extract among the few marine microalgae ingredients with real clinical evidence supporting anti-inflammatory and barrier-function benefits for sensitive skin (DOI: https://doi.org/10.3390/md19080464).
