Ectoine
What is it?
An extremolyte compound produced by extremophile microorganisms, used in skin-repair and barrier-support formulations, including post-procedure recovery products.
What does it do?
According to PubMed, a 2025 controlled clinical trial examined the influence of ectoine on skin parameters damaged by CO2 laser treatment, finding that increasing ectoine content and application frequency reduced redness, with the best-performing preparation raising moisture levels and reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL fell from 6.2 to 5.3 g/(m2*h)) when applied twice daily (DOI: https://doi.org/10.3390/molecules30112470).
