Edelweiss Extract
INCI: Leontopodium Alpinum Extract
What is it?
An extract from edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum), an alpine wildflower, often produced via callus (tissue) culture due to the plant's protected status in many countries; studied for antioxidant and anti-aging effects.
What does it do?
According to PubMed, a 2020 study combining in vitro, ex vivo, in vivo and transcriptome analyses found edelweiss callus culture extract showed strong antioxidant activity against UVB-induced damage, suppressed inflammation and wrinkling, increased moisturizing activity, and a clinical test found constant application improved periorbital wrinkles, skin elasticity, dermal density and skin thickness compared with placebo (DOI: https://doi.org/10.3390/genes11020230). A 2021 phytochemical study confirmed strong free-radical-scavenging activity in edelweiss callus culture extracts via UPLC/IM-HRMS analysis (DOI: https://doi.org/10.3390/plants11010100).
