Kaolin Clay

What is it?

Kaolin Clay is a naturally occurring hydrated aluminum silicate mineral clay, widely used in skincare as a gentle absorbent ingredient in cleansers, masks and powders.

What does it do?

Commonly used to absorb excess oil and gently cleanse without stripping the skin, milder than more absorbent clays like bentonite. According to PubMed, a 4-week clinical study of a multi-ingredient clay mask (containing kaolin and bentonite among its ingredients) in 75 adults with oily or combination skin found significant improvements in acne severity, sebum content and skin hydration with good tolerability -- evidence for the mask formulation as a whole rather than an isolated-kaolin trial.
