Lactobionic Acid
What is it?
A polyhydroxy acid (PHA) derived from lactose, valued in skincare for a gentler exfoliation and moisturizing profile than classic AHAs.
What does it do?
Commonly used as a gentle exfoliant and antioxidant, suited to sensitive skin. According to PubMed, a literature review of lactic and lactobionic acids found both compounds bind substantial water and act as antioxidants through matrix-metalloproteinase inhibition and metal-chelating properties, while maintaining epidermal barrier integrity -- making lactobionic acid usable even on sensitive, couperose-prone skin.
