Phytic Acid (IP6)

INCI: Phytic Acid

What is it?

A naturally occurring plant compound (often rice-bran derived) used in cosmetic formulation chiefly as a metal-chelating agent and mild antioxidant stabilizer, rather than as a primary active.

What does it do?

According to PubMed, a formulation-stability study of a skin-brightening active (phenylethyl resorcinol) found phytic acid, alongside EDTA, completely prevented light- and storage-induced discoloration of the formulation by chelating trace metal ions -- real evidence for phytic acid's role as a cosmetic chelating/stabilizing agent, distinct from (and more modest than) marketing claims about phytic acid as a standalone exfoliant or brightener.
