Polyglutamic Acid

What is it?

Polyglutamic acid (poly-gamma-glutamic acid, gamma-PGA) is a naturally derived, water-soluble biopolymer produced by fermentation, used in skincare as a humectant valued for its high water-binding capacity.

What does it do?

Commonly used as a humectant to strengthen the skin barrier and improve moisture retention. A study using keratinocyte cultures and a reconstructed skin model found gamma-PGA dose-dependently increased expression of skin barrier markers (filaggrin, involucrin, loricrin), though this evidence is preclinical (cell/tissue-model) rather than from a human clinical trial.
