Rambutan Extract

INCI: Nephelium Lappaceum Peel Extract

What is it?

An extract from the peel of rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum), a Southeast Asian fruit, studied alongside litchi and tamarind peel/seed extracts for anti-aging skincare use as a way to valorise fruit-processing waste.

What does it do?

According to PubMed, a 2017 in vitro study found rambutan peel extract had real superoxide radical-scavenging, elastase- and collagenase-inhibiting, and tyrosinase-inhibiting activity, was safe on human skin fibroblasts, and inhibited MMP-2; however, of the three fruit-residue extracts tested side by side, rambutan was consistently the least potent of the three on most measures, with litchi peel extract showing the strongest effects (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1590/0001-3765201720160849).
