Rice Bran Extract
INCI: Oryza Sativa Bran Extract
What is it?
A rice-processing byproduct extract rich in anthocyanins and phenolic compounds, studied for skin brightening and antioxidant properties, distinct from the already-catalogued fermented rice-ferment-filtrate.
What does it do?
According to PubMed, a 2023 in-vitro study of purple glutinous rice bran and husk extracts found the defatted rice bran extract was the most effective inhibitor of mushroom tyrosinase and intracellular melanin production among the extracts tested, showing a whitening effect comparable to the standard brightening agent arbutin, and also significantly inhibited collagen degradation against MMP-2 (DOI: https://doi.org/10.3390/plants12040970). A separate 2020 study optimizing anthocyanin extraction from red rice bran found real antioxidant (DPPH and superoxide-anion scavenging) and tyrosinase-inhibitory activity, though weaker than the vitamin C standard used for comparison (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1002/fsn3.1371).
