Squalane

What is it?

Squalane is the hydrogenated, shelf-stable form of squalene, a lipid naturally present in human sebum; it is widely used as a lightweight, non-comedogenic emollient in moisturizers.

What does it do?

Commonly used as an emollient to soften skin and reduce moisture loss. It has been tested clinically as part of a multi-ingredient emollient blend (alongside shea butter, glycerin and hyaluronic acid) rather than in isolation, so standalone efficacy data specific to squalane is limited.
