Squalene (Plant-Derived)
INCI: Squalene
What is it?
A triterpene lipid naturally present in human skin-surface sebum, used topically as an emollient and antioxidant -- most commercial skincare instead uses the hydrogenated, more oxidatively stable form "Squalane" (a separate, not-yet-catalogued INCI entry).
What does it do?
According to PubMed, a review of squalene's biological and pharmacological activity in cosmetic dermatology documents real emollient, antioxidant, hydrating and some antitumor-activity evidence from in vitro and in vivo studies, and notes its established use in topical lipid emulsions and nanostructured lipid carriers.
