Humectant ·

Moderate evidence

Xylitylglucoside

What is it?

A plant-sugar-derived humectant, typically formulated together with anhydroxylitol and xylitol as part of a moisturizing complex (marketed as "Aquaxyl"), studied for improving skin microrelief and hydration.

What does it do?

According to PubMed, a 2022 study using a novel portable 3D skin-imaging camera found that a cream containing the xylitylglucoside-anhydroxylitol-xylitol complex reduced skin roughness amplitude and the height and area of skin surface plateaus 8 hours after a single application in 18 subjects, outperforming creams containing urea or saccharide isomerate alone on some of these measures (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1111/srt.13190). This study tested the three-ingredient complex together rather than isolated xylitylglucoside alone.
