Our story

SkinLabs was born from a simple frustration: most skincare advice reaching South Africans was written for someone else's climate, someone else's shelves, and often, someone else's skin. The imported content didn't account for Highveld dryness, coastal humidity, intense UV exposure at altitude, hard municipal water, or the unique needs of melanin-rich skin that dominates our demographic.

So we rebuilt skincare intelligence from the ground up for South Africa. What started as a small AI-powered e-commerce experiment in 2023 has evolved into something far more ambitious: an independent, evidence-based skincare intelligence platform that puts editorial integrity and community value above everything else.

We're not a beauty retailer with a blog attached. We're a content and community-first platform with a clear mission: to deliver research-grounded skincare guidance that's actually useful for South African skin, climate, and budget — with editorial that can't be bought and no pressure to sell you anything you don't need.

Our members fund most of the work, with advertising and clearly labelled sponsored placements covering part of the cost — but the work answers to readers, not to brands, advertisers or anyone trying to game our scores. Every briefing is summarized from credible global sources and translated into what it actually means here: seasonal UV, Highveld dryness, coastal humidity, hard municipal water, local pricing, and the realities of melanin-rich skin.

Today, SkinLabs serves over 3,700 community members across South Africa with daily science briefings (The Daily Skinny), independent product reviews scored for local conditions, a monthly brand ranking (Spotlight), seasonal skincare guides, podcast episodes, and SKYNN AI — our flagship skin assessment and routine-building tool that stays firmly on the cosmetic side of medical advice.

What makes SkinLabs different

Built for South African skin

We're not a European or American platform with "ZAR" swapped in. Every product review, every briefing, and every AI recommendation is explicitly designed for South African climate zones (Highveld, coastal, Western Cape), water quality, UV intensity at altitude, and melanin-rich skin — which the majority of South Africans have.

Truly independent reviews

Brands can't buy a score, a ranking or a verdict, and advertisers and sponsors aren't part of how we assess a product. If a product gets a high score, it's because the formulation, value, texture, and SA climate fit genuinely earned it — not because a brand paid for placement or sent us free product. Any commercial relationship is disclosed on the review itself.

Evidence over hype

Every score, every briefing, and every AI recommendation is grounded in published dermatology research and cosmetic chemistry evidence. Where a brand's claims outpace what its formula can actually deliver, we cap the score and say so clearly.

Member-funded, partly ad-supported

Members pay for premium features (AI routines, full briefings, unlimited reviews), and that subscription revenue funds most of what we do. SkinLabs® is also partly ad-supported, so you may see ads and sponsored content or placements — always labelled Advertisement or Sponsored. Where a brand's claim outpaces what its formula can support, we cap the score and say so.

1. Ingredient & Evidence Review

We compare disclosed active concentrations against published dermatology and cosmetic-chemistry evidence for those actives at those levels.

2. Value Benchmarking

Price-per-ml is benchmarked against comparable SA products from brand sites and major local stockists, captured at the research date.

3. SA Climate Reasoning

Formulation science is reasoned across the dry Highveld, humid KZN coast and windy Western Cape belt — not climate-chamber testing.

4. Editorial Disclosure

Every product page carries our methodology and a consumer-protection disclaimer: scores are editorial opinions, not claims of independent lab or clinical testing.

As a content and community-first platform, our biggest sustainability lever is editorial honesty: we never let affiliate deals or gifted samples influence a score, and we flag mineral-oil bases, synthetic fragrance and packaging trade-offs even in well-loved products.

We also carry a lighter footprint by design — SkinLabs is a digital briefing, review and consultation platform with no warehousing or shipping operations, and we prioritise recommending SA-formulated, recyclable-packaged products where the evidence supports it.
