BHA Exfoliant ·
Salicylic Acid
What is it?
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) derived from willow bark, widely used as a leave-on and rinse-off exfoliant for oily and acne-prone skin due to its lipophilic, pore-penetrating properties.
What does it do?
Commonly used to help exfoliate the skin surface, unclog pores and reduce acne lesions; clinical trials show OTC salicylic-acid-based regimens can perform comparably to prescription acne regimens with better day-to-day tolerability.
Who may benefit?
- May help with: Acne & Congestion
How to use
Typically formulated at 0.5%-2% for leave-on products.
Use with caution
- Retinaldehyde — Space out use
Layering a retinoid with a BHA exfoliant in the same session increases the risk of redness and peeling.
Use on alternating nights.
- Encapsulated Retinoid — Space out use
Layering a retinoid with a BHA exfoliant in the same session increases the risk of redness and peeling.
Use on alternating nights.
- Retinol — Space out use
Layering a retinoid with a BHA exfoliant in the same session increases the risk of redness and peeling.
Use on alternating nights, or space applications by at least 30 minutes.
- Glycolic Acid — Space out use
Stacking two exfoliating acids in one routine raises the risk of over-exfoliation and barrier disruption.
Alternate which one is used per session rather than layering both.
