Commonly used as an occlusive emollient to reduce transepidermal water loss. Clinical studies of petrolatum (the closely related semisolid mineral-oil derivative) show real, measurable skin barrier and hydration effects, and it remains a benchmark comparator in dermatology research for occlusive moisturizers — evidence specific to the liquid form (paraffinum liquidum) itself is more limited.

Commonly used as an antioxidant to help protect skin from environmental and UV-induced oxidative stress. A review of ellagic acid (a key pomegranate polyphenol) found evidence for skin depigmentation, antioxidant, anti-photoaging and anti-inflammatory effects, and an in vitro/in vivo study on a related polyphenol-rich fruit extract found real photoprotective and antioxidant effects.
